Mariah

Profession (or aspirational work thang)

Anyone need a study buddy? About to begin the process of preparing for the GRE to eventually study Public Health/Sustainable Food Systems. In the meantime I have also been volunteering with Sprout’s Cooking Club: a super sweet nonprofit that offers afterschool programing in Berkeley and Oakland elementary schools. Last week 12 kids and instructors crammed into a tiny kitchen to make apple cake and zoodles. Cozy and yum.

Passion

My lowkey plan is to become absurdly self-sufficient. I know that sounds like an umbrella statement but when the zombie apocalypse comes I want to be prepared, you know. I geek out on learning how to grow my own food, cook, and preserve it. I’m super passionate about herbalism and home remedies. Being able to identify plants for their medicinal uses is something I definitely get excited about!

What’s that one thing that makes you quirky in the best way possible?

I love birds. I love all birds. I watched planet earth the other day and watched a bit on hawks, it was fascinating. I volunteered with penguins in South Africa and, man, can those guys bite. Last year, I worked with 30 chickens at a school garden and it was a blast. Google silkie chicken, it’s worth it.

What’s something that makes you feel odd that you’d like to challenge yourself to be better at this year?

I would love to learn more about photography. I think it’s such a fun and useful skill. I’m super into food photography and it’s about time I upgraded from an Iphone! There is so much information all around the web, I’d love to just hunker down and try and teach myself.

Why is being unique important to you?

I’ve found that embracing what makes me unique can transform my whole outlook on life. These special qualities give me my story, values, drive, and purpose. It also helps me see the same in others. I think in welcoming what makes us different, we get closer to empathizing with, supporting, and empowering others.

What’s something odd/strange/crazy/weird but incredibly cool you heard about recently?

I went to the Botanical Gardens at UC Berkeley a couple days back. There were plants featured from all over the world: cacti, orchids, carnivorous plants, and succulents. There was even a succulent from Namibia called Welwitschia mirabilis which can live over 2,000 years! I lost my mind over that one.

Laila

Profession (or aspirational work thang)

During the day, I do Program Management for an international health non-profit. I work on projects in Senegal and Benin and get to travel quite a bit.  The other half of my time is spent working on launching my jewelry business, which will give training and employment opportunities to refugees. *coming soon*

Passion

I LOVE making jewelry. It is an absolute passion of mine. There’s something about working with your hands and pounding on metal that is so satisfying!

What’s that one thing that makes you quirky in the best way possible?

Surfing! I’m not very good at it, and get slammed all the time BUT I’m obsessed with it and want to get better. Now I just need to live by a beach!

What’s something that makes you feel odd that you’d like to challenge yourself to be better at this year?

Being open to views that are not similar to my own. I want to have more diversity of thought in my circles. I think now more than ever it’s important to connect to those that I normally wouldn’t.

Why is being unique important to you?

I think everyone and everything on this earth is unique and it’s important to recognize that there is beauty in that. Just noticing that can bring you happiness. No 2 waves, 2 plants or 2 people are the same :)

What’s something odd/strange/crazy/weird but incredibly cool you heard about recently?

I recently listened to this podcast where they talked about an incredible experiment to show the connection between mind and body. In the 80s, they sent 80 year old men to live in a retrofitted house to 20 years earlier (so 1960s) and they were told to live there as if it were the present and that they were 20 years younger. The post exam showed that their hearing, vision, memory, and strength improved in just a week’s time!!

Haleluya

Profession (or aspirational work thang)

My official title at work is ‘Glitter Trader’ which was a cheeky replacement for ‘Regional Sales Manager’. I get to work with the coolest team of peeps at Pelonkey, Inc, and help event planners create magical - glittery, if you will - experiences at their events with the help of my company’s extensive collection of talent and A/V capabilities!

Passion

I am a total dork when it comes to anything music related. Commencing touting of own horn:  I have been regaled for my hella vibe-able playlists and ability to carry a tune *outside* the shower. Nbd.

What’s that one thing that makes you quirky in the best way possible?

This is an agreed upon fact: my laugh is hysterically unique- like, in the ‘Is that even real/human?’ kind of way. Oh, and I love to paint!

What’s something that makes you feel odd that you’d like to challenge yourself to be better at this year?

I am notoriously late to most friendly gatherings, and it didn’t give much thought until someone pointed out that they typically expect me to arrive 30 minutes after I say I will. Working diligently at this - high hopes for 2018 *fingers crossed*.

Why is being unique important to you?

I have always been a proponent of the ‘against the grain’ method of approaching life. I find generic to be boring, and boring is boring. *side hand emoji*

What’s something odd/strange/crazy/weird but incredibly cool you heard about recently?

CARDS AGAINST HUMANITY TROLLED DONALD TRUMP: the game company recently purchased a plot on the US/Mexican border and retained a legal team to make Donny’s brilliantly pointless border wall idea that much more difficult to accomplish. *sips tea and waits for tweet*
