It wasn't easy to make this list. As a brand that wants to do things right, we value the hard work that other companies put into building businesses that care about making a positive impact. As customers, we love the wealth of options that make it easier for us to add pieces with a story to our closet.
So here are some of our picks for when we get in the shopping mood. We pair everything with one of our own bags, of course!
This giant of the fashion world (celebrities all over can’t get enough of The Reformation’s digs) has really found the formula for beautiful, quality clothing that pays close attention to water use, co2 emissions, and sustainable fabrics. Everything is made in the USA and many pieces use leftover fabric. This is definitely a brand you'll be going back to for head-turning pieces you can feel great about.
For: The conscious trendsetter.
Everlane has been the gateway drug for many an ethical fashion newbie so we had to include them. You’ll find your favorite t-shirt, your new favorite backpack, and a gorgeous pair of loafers all in the same place. Everlane informs us about the cost of labor and transportation so we know exactly what we’re paying for. (We also love their anti-Black Friday Sale which encourages people to rethink buying in excess.)
For: the basics you need with the conscience you can't live without.
From Peru to Nashville with love. Nisolo does killer shoe design and employment for the skilled shoe makers in Trujillo, Peru. Some 100,000 people in Trujillo work in this industry, bringing impeccable craftsmanship to their product. Since 2011 they’ve gone from showcasing just a few styles to having an arsenal of stylish basics that range from your classic stiletto to your everyday handbag.
For: The leather shoe obsessed with a soft spot for artisan-made.
Even swimsuit designers have gotten into the ethical fashion game and we think Jungle Gurl does it best. Buy one of the ready-made styles or choose your bikini cut, your preferred vintage fabric swatch (from a pre-loved dress), and wait with major anticipation for your custom bathing suit to arrive. Styles for men and women mean unlimited potential for matching his and hers bathing suits. We’re only kind of kidding.
For: The upcycle-loving, summer obsessed.
Even our undies can be ethical. Azura Bay from Canada has our favorite array of pretty and functional under garments (bras, underwear, bathing suits and more!) by brands that pay attention to their products. Some of our favorite ethically made and eco friendly brands on the site include Vitamin A, Pact and Skoloff (>>>).
For: The thoughtful bra and panty shopper.
Statement jewelry takes on a whole new meaning with this company that is rethinking and re-incorporating pre-smart phone technology to allow Kenyan artisans to participate in commerce on a global scale. We love the fusion designs and sustainable materials, but most importantly that each piece comes with a story.
For: Those of us that want to support local while getting beautiful, utterly unique designs.
We like to think of this website as browsing for good. We love how so many ethical accessories and apparel brands find a home at Accompany, which scours the globe for fair-trade, artisan-made, and philanthropic companies. We’re owners of some of Accompany's unique jewelry finds, but everything is highly curated so you’ll be thrilled with just about anything from their partners.
For: One-stop ethical shoppers.
This brand has figured out that intentional fashion can be the most fulfilling. All of their products are made with high-quality materials and intended to be loved for a long-time. We love their simple lines and beautiful fabrics and could easily fill our closets with these basics. Bonus: Cuyana gives shoppers the option to choose “lean shipping”, which sends customers a reusable bag to fill with old clothes and ship back for donation and $10 off your next purchase.
For: The minimalist loving, fast fashion adverse.
We just can’t get over how effortlessly cool Noel Bennetto’s hand-dyed vintage jeans and dresses are. Her American Indian heritage inspires the designs that are bleached directly onto your new pants. Can’t wait to spot one of these on the street sometime.
For: The vintage-loving wild child who can and does pull off absolutely everything.
